Sarah Shepley has been a professional artist for 20 years. She graduated from Portland School of Art with a B.F.A. in Ceramics and has explored many different media over the years, including 12 years designing polymer clay jewelry. She has furthered her education through the continuing studies program at MECA taking classes in printmaking, silkscreen design, encaustic painting and more. In 2002 she started making books, and purchased an etching press to explore and deepen her love of printmaking. She consistently uses her prints in her book making. “I love the combination of integrating three-dimensional works with two-dimensional design.” Over the past 6 years, Sarah has taught bookmaking throughout the state of Maine, combining the technique of handmade books along with designing papers and embellishing with metals, wood and collage. Currently, as a theology student, Sarah weaves together her spirituality with her books. This is exemplified through the poetry Sarah chooses for her books, as well as the creation of memory books in celebration of life transitions (weddings, births, deaths, graduations). She sells her work to galleries and takes personal commissions for memory books. Her recent work is an exploration into three-dimensional boxes that contain books. Sarah is member of a collective art gallery in Norway, Maine where she has exhibited her work over the past 6 years. |
